Taiwan was part of the Empire of Japan in 1914, in fact was ever since 1895 when Qing Empire lost it in a war (and the Qing never controlled all of Taiwan, just the coastal areas, something to keep in mind). It was Japan's first colony, and arguably the most successful one.
